"Iron Man 3" is already a hit film, and it hasn't shown on a single screen for U.S. audiences yet. That's because Marvel's follow-up to their mega-hit, "The Avengers," opened early in dozens of foreign markets this past weekend and took in $195 million. To put that sum into perspective, "The Avengers" had only made $185 at this point last year.
Back in this country, however, things were much slower with the top grossing film of the weekend, Michael Bay's "Pain & Gain," only taking in $20 million. The crime comedy starring Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson eked out a victory over last week's champ, "Oblivion," which added $17 million to it domestic total.
Next weekend is when the sparks begin to fly. That's when "Iron Man 3" hits the U.S. "The Avengers" took in $209 million in its opening weekend, so we'll have to wait and see how Robert Downey Jr. can fare on his own.
