Over the weekend at a press conference for "Oz the Great and Powerful," director Sam Raimi spoke about his plans to finally get working on a fourth "Evil Dead" movie, one that would follow "Army of Darkness" instead of the Fede Alvarez's upcoming, super-gory remake.
"I would love to make 'Evil Dead 4,'" he said. "My brother and I plan to work on the script this summer." And geeks from the 80s collectively lost their minds.
After all this time, the Deadites of world would finally know what happens next to Bruce Campbell's Ash Williams. Are there more possessed creatures roaming the modern day world? How is middle age treating Ash? We'd probably get all of those answers, but Raimi took a few steps back the next day when talking to Bleeding Cool.
If you've ever seen an interview with Raimi, you know that he's soft-spoken, and apparently, quite susceptible to persuasion.
"Those guys made me say that," he said, referring to his comments from the previous day. "I am thinking about it but a crowd goes 'Come on Sam, do it!' so I said 'Okay, I guess I was talking to my brother about it.' But I feel like I was pushed into saying that, a little bit. In the hallway today I joked with Ivan [his brother] 'Get working on that script!' but I really don't know."
Though Raimi played down his previous comments, he does have the intention to make "Evil Dead 4," but if he does it, it wouldn't be for his own satisfaction. "I'm afraid that every time I talk about it people get really mad at me when I don't follow through with it," he said. "I would like to work on the script over the summer, that much is true. But the reason to come back and do it again is only that they're making me, those fans."
Raimi shared that much with his brother, Ivan, who called him out on his first-world problem. "I was saying to Ivan 'Why do they stay on this thing? Why do they keep at it?' and he said 'They want to make a movie. You're a filmmaker and your fans are asking you to make the movie. What are you, an idiot? Make the movie!' I guess there's something I don't see," Raimi said. "It makes sense when Ivan says it... but I didn't have a tremendous amount of passion until right now to bring to it."
