Ellen DeGeneres has taken to her blog to weigh in on California's Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in the state after its passage in 2008. The out television host and comedienne (whose has a wife much hotter than most straight men do) wants the Supreme Court to grant gay couples the same legal rights as everyone else.
"Portia [de Rossi] and I have been married for 4 years and they have been the happiest of my life," Ellen wrote. "And in those 4 years, I don't think we hurt anyone else's marriage. I asked all of my neighbors and they say they're fine."
Leave it to Ellen to make light of such a serious situation, while still bringing the message home! Even though she's married, she and her wife are still denied many of the rights granted to straight couples. She continues, "Even though Portia and I got married in the short period of time when it was legal in California, there are 1,138 federal rights for married couples that we don't have, including some that protect married people from losing their homes, or their savings or custody of their children."
Ellen joins a long list of celebs, including President Obama, in speaking out for same-sex marriage. "Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law," Obama said during his inauguration speech. In a February 28th brief, the Obama administration argued that Prop. 8 denies same-sex couples the right to equal protection under the law. The administration will present its case against Prop. 8 to the Supreme Court on March 26th! If only Ellen could be there to charm the pants off 'em.
