You know how much we loved "Half the Sky," right? Well now you don't have to buy the book to get involved in helping girls and women around the world. As of today, you can play Half the Sky Movement: The Game, which means you can help just by logging on to Facebook.
Sheryl WuDunn and her husband, Nick Kristof, wrote the namesake book, but they knew there were other ways to engage a larger audience in the movement. As WuDunn explained to Glamour, they knew that reading wasn't necessarily America's favorite hobby: "The documentary garnered a larger audience and trended on Twitter, but the game has even greater potential to reach more people through something that hooks them."
So how does the game help women and girls around the world IRL? They've partnered with Games for Change and other orgs to "produce something impacting: $500,000 in funds is now available for players to unlock and trigger real-life donations of books and life-saving surgeries from sponsors."
Whoa. $500,000 worth of donations has been provided by corporate partners and are unlocked by players simply by playing the game?! True story, y'all. While playing the game is an awesome way to show support, you can always donate too! 100% of your donation goes to an org that is focused on helping to end the oppression of women and girls. So it's win-win, even if you lose in the game. And this is one of those cases where you can't hate the playah or THE GAME.
To play this new Facebook "adventure," just log on to your Facebook account and start playing. It's that easy to start improving the lives of others halfway across the world!
