It's not rare for a specific year at the movies to have an overarching theme. The similarities in the biggest films of the year are often easiest to distinguish during awards season, when we get a nice snapshot of the year that was, and 2012 was no different.
Cast your vote for the 2013 MTV Movie Awards NOW! When you look at the recently announced nominations for the 2013 MTV Movie Awards, particularly the Movie of the Year category, you get the impression that 2012 was a dude's year at theater.
We'll admit that the five nominees for Movie of the Year, "The Avengers," "The Dark Knight Rises," "Django Unchained," "Silver Linings Playbook," and "Ted," all have elements that are universally appealing, but perhaps with the exception of the Jennifer Lawrence-Bradley Cooper movie, the nominees this year had one key demo in mind: males, 18-35. (And "Silver Linings Playbook" gets points for JLaw.)
After "The Twilight Saga" dominated the MTV Movie Awards for years, do we have a clear change in what movies we're watching and enjoying? No one can doubt that superheroes had an unimaginably huge year, so you can easily pin the change on the capes and the cowls.
