Cassidy Lynn Campbell made history Friday night, after becoming the first transgender student at Marina High School in Huntington Beach, CA to be crowned homecoming queen. 

"It seemed like a dream," she said. "I just think it is such a huge step for the transgender community. The majority at my school wanted me to win. So many people embraced me and accept me for who I am. I think that is pretty profound."

Cassidy, who up until three years ago went by Lance, didn't see the homecoming race as a popularity contest, but rather as an opportunity to raise awareness for the trans community. "My goal isn't to be famous, it's to open people's eyes to the world around them, to teach people to be open minded and to rethink social norms," she said.

However, Cassidy's big moment didn't come without backlash. In a video posted to YouTube on Saturday, she broke down over some of the painful things people have said online since her win. "It just hurts so bad because I feel just as much of a girl as all of them do. This is how I've always been and this is how I've always felt. It's not a choice." We love ya, girl!
