One piece of news that made the Disney acquisition of Lucasfilm bittersweet was the end of the beloved "Star Wars: Clone Wars" series on Cartoon Network. Diehards of the show followed for seasons as we learned what went down during the intervening years between "Attack of the Clones" and "Revenge of the Sith," but under Disney's redirection, "Clone Wars" came to an end with the promise of more "Star Wars" animation to come.
The promise was fulfilled by the announcement of "Star Wars Rebels," a new animated show taking place between the two trilogies, and now some recognizable names are in talks to voice the characters from that galaxy far, far away.
The Hollywood Reporter just published a story claiming that "The Butler" breakout David Oyelow — who was rumored last week for "Episode VII" — and Freddie Prinze Jr. are among the voice actors joining the project.
The inclusion of Oyelowo is particularly interesting because he had been one of the many, many names rumored to have read for a role in "Episode VII." The Hollywood Reporter makes clear that his inclusion in "Star Wars Rebels" does not preclude any involvement in the new trilogy, but it's not a big jump in logic to suggest the animated series is why Oyelowo was associated with Lucasfilm in the first place.
Simon Kinberg, a writer currently working on a spin-off film for the big screen, is listed as one of the executive producers on "Star Wars Rebels."
No premiere date has been set yet for "Star Wars Rebels," but it will air on Disney XD.
