Do you ever check out the tags on the items you buy, to see where they're made? Odds are quite a few aren't made in America, and actress/philanthropist Kristen Bell has created a new challenge to get people to shop closer to home.
Kristen started by Tweeting:
I'm only buying Made In America for 30 days. We'll call it the #USA30day challenge. Cheesy? of course. Awesome? obviously. Anybody want in?
— Kristen Bell (@IMKristenBell) September 7, 2013
She went on:
Radical. So tag #30dayUSA when you post cool american made stuff so we can all find it and make this holiday season all made in the USA.

She also gave this useful tidbit:
Might be helpful: beyond the web, hashtag ur city if you find good Made in the USA goods. so people know where to find em #30dayusa #la

There are a few reasons why this is a neat idea. For one, buying from one's own country helps that country's economy. It gets money moving and helps people keep jobs. This is true wherever you go. For instance, when helping Third World countries rise up out of poverty, it's not about just sending in stuff from the outside. Like, instead of sending in outside food and thinking the problem is fixed, efforts are made so the country can make its own food. Instead of sending in doctors from other countries, it's important to train local people to be doctors. Make sense? And even though America is not a Third World country, the same steps are helpful here to have a healthy, self-sustaining economy.
Buying locally can also help the environment. If you buy food from your local farmer's market, for instance, you're supporting your local economy AND you're lowering pollution. 'Cause the food you bought just traveled here from a mile away, not thousands of miles. Trying to buy everything inside your own country might be harder than you think, but it can also be beneficial. If you decide to take up Kristen's challenge, let us know how things go in the next #30days!
