Serena Williams overcame Belarus' Victoria Azarenka and a frustrating bout of wind on Sunday to win the 5th U.S. Open championship of her career, and her second in a row. Serena has always been a phenomenal tennis player, but 14 years after her first U.S. Open win, the 31-year-old woman is finally finding her confidence off the court.
Believe it or not, Williams hasn't always been as sure in life as she is in tennis. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Serena revealed one of her biggest weaknesses. Yes, she has weaknesses. "I had to get comfortable with knowing that one of my weaknesses was my weight," she said. "Especially growing up with Venus, who's so tall and slim and model-like, and me, I'm thick and hips and everything."
But Serena has learned to embrace her strong, bodacious bod, and to stop comparing it to her twin sister's leaner figure. "I used to feel like I wanted to be [Venus]," she shared. "I wanted to be thin, but it wasn't me, so I had to learn that I'm going to have larger boobs. I'm going to be bigger, and just enjoy that. So I think it's good for a lot of other girls who are curvy or more bodacious to be confident in themselves."
According to DoSomething.org, over 90 percent of women are "unhappy with their bodies and resort to dieting to achieve their ideal body shape. Unfortunately, only 5 percent of women naturally possess the body type often portrayed by Americans in the media." Male or female, let's all take a page out of Serena's book and learn to love ourselves regardless of size and shape!
