Madonna will be presented with the Top Touring Artist Award at the upcoming Billboard Music Awards, but there's a second honor she chould be receiving: most charitable. The queen of pop recently sold a $7.2 million painting to raise funds for girls' education projects in the Middle East, South Asia and Africa.
Madonna bought the abstract painting -- Trois Femmes a la Table Rouge, by French artist Fernand Leger -- back in 1990. Twenty-three years later, it was purchased by an unidentified buyer at Sotheby's Impressionist and Modern Art sale in NYC. The buyer paid $8.8 million after fees. (I just paid for my Starbucks in quarters...)
Proceeds from the sale will go to Madonna's Ray Of Light Foundation, which aids street children and poor farmers in developing countries. Girls make up the majority of the world's 61 million out-of-school children, but the queen of pop ain't havin' it! "I want to trade something valuable for something invaluable -- educating girls," she said in a statement about the painting. It turns out Madonna has a lot of valuable possessions that could earn a pretty penny for charity...
+ Cone-Shaped Bras: $77,000
Last year, two of Madonna's trademark cone-shaped bras were auctioned off for $77,000! I will never complain about how expensive Victoria's Secret is again. In most developing nations, governments lack the funds to educate their youth for free. Madonna could dust off an old, pointy bra, sell it, then send hundreds, if not thousands, of children to school with the money! Talk about girl power...or, rather, "girls" power.
+ Her "Like A Virgin" Wedding Dress: $???
If her bras sold for $77,000, I can only imagine what Madonna's clothes would cost. Then again, her bras often were her clothes...
+ Signed Check: $500
A $500 check made out to her assistant Brad Jeffries in 1985 recently sold for $500. So basically, Madonna can write a check for any amount, void it, then sell it for the amount it was written for?! Shoot, I think it's time she writes her first billion dollar check.
Just because you can't sell your used underwear for thousands of dollars doesn't mean you can't help out! Take action below to shine a Ray Of Light on the lives of children in need.
