Regular people have Halloween, but famous people have the Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute Benefit aka The Met Gala. Every year, celebs gather at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, dressed in a common theme. Last night's theme was "punk," and the event was star-studded. As in everyone was wearing studs.
Inspired? Want to take up (or revisit) some punk style for spring? Here are a few charitable alternatives to the high fashion punk ensembles we saw on the red carpet.
1. F*** Cancer T-Shirt
"Every kid thinks they know more than their parents, but for the first time in history, this might just be true." F*** Cancer's mission statement sounds like just what every stereotypical punk teen wants to hear! Seeing as 90% of cancers are preventable, the best way to flip cancer off is by spreading awareness. Get the censored "F**k Cancer" tee, or go full-punk with the uncensored version.
2. MTV x Caliber Bracelet
Rep metal and rebellion the right way with a limited edition "MTV x Caliber" bracelet. Created by Jewelry For A Cause, each bracelet features the serial number of an illegal firearm returned via Newark, NJ buyback programs. And since being punk is all about being different, no two bracelets share the same serial number!
3. Boot Campaign Combat Boots
If you're looking for something a little more badass, go for the combat boots! Boot Campaign donates a portion of every boot sale to programs that support returning soldiers. There are 1.1 million disabled vets in the U.S. under 55, and many of them need our help.
4 Eco-Friendly Hair Dye
Being a punk is all about freedom of expression, and many punks choose to express themselves through their hair. Many hair dyes contain chemicals that are harmful to the environment, so whether you're going bleach blonde like Miley Cyrus or purple like Kelly Osbourne, look for eco-friendly and ammonia-free labels. Or bypass dye altogether and use Henna or Kool-Aid. Seriously. Google it.
5. TOMS Black Botas
There are over 300 million children in the world living without shoes, so for every pair of Black Botas sold, Toms donates a pair to punk in need.
