Lesbian, gey, bisexual and transgender Americans and their allies are extra loud and proud today. It's the very first Give OUT Day -- which is all about donating to (and getting involved with!) LGBT causes and organizations.
While passion for LGBT equality has been growing, research has shown that maybe five out of 100 people in the LGBT community are donating to LGBT causes. This brings us to Give OUT Day, which is hoping to motivate people into getting involved and opening their wallets. (Allies are more than welcome to join in, too!)
Many nonprofits are participating in this event, so check out the Give OUT Day website to see who all is involved. If you're old enough to be paying taxes (sorry), it's good to know that any amount you give today is tax-deductible. On top of that, we have some healthy competition going on. Nonprofits that do the best in different categories (like National -- Overall and National -- Smaller Groups) will receive extra cash prizes.
There are other ways to help if you're not able to donate at this time, like spreading awareness for the day on social media, which could be as easy as liking Give OUT on Facebook or following on Twitter. Another good idea? You could browse through the different nonprofits involved. Maybe there's a nonprofit in your neighborhood you didn't know about, and this could give you a chance to volunteer there. So let's wave our rainbow flags and see what we can get accomplished by 11:59pm EDT tonight!
