Kendrick Lamar is MTV's "Hottest MC in the Game," but he currently holds another position he's even more proud of: being a Get Schooled spokesperson. We recently chatted with the "Swimming Pools" rapper, who was the first person in his family to graduate from high school, about why his fans should value education as much as he does.
Kendrick graduated from high school with a 4.0, but he wasn't always the ideal student. "I did some of the dumbest things," he said, referring to ditching class...only to get caught by his mom on numerous occasions. "My mom would just ride past and do a double-take. ... She'd take me right back to my class." But as his friends grew more rebellious, Kendrick began to realize that his mom had his best interests in mind. "Being on that corner so many times, I started getting into more dramatic situations," he shared. "I eventually understood that my mama wasn't trying to put me on blast with the homies, she was trying to save my life. And that's exactly what she did."
When it comes to success, Kendrick explains, "It starts with what you're doing now. Setting goals. Waking up on time. Finishing assignments. ... It takes a lot to be successful, but you can do it. I come from that same place, just like you." But K' doesn't want you to end up in the same place before you finish high school and college. "Promise me that you will graduate from high school; that you will take the steps to go to college." Even the "Hottest MC In The Game" has regrets, and Kendrick's is "still to this day, not being able to experience what it feels like to be in college."
