Mary Lambert -- the female voice on Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' LGBTQ anthem "Same Love" -- recently recorded her own moving version of the song. Backed by piano and violins, and sung by the Seattle-based Lambert, "She Keeps Me Warm" is transformed into a beautiful ballad about lady love.
Lambert has been open about her struggles growing up gay in an abusive Christian household. "I fought it for a long time," she said. "Then I fell in love with another girl, and then I decided I would repent every day, because I knew I wasn't going to change. But that was absurd." Now comfortable in her own skin, Mary doesn't want to hide anything from her fans. "When I came out, I said, 'I'm going to be a proud gay artist," she told HuffPost, noting that being out doesn't mean she's only going to make "gay music."
The original "Same Love" topped the charts, and gained even more popularity after the Supreme Court's historic overturning of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and Prop 8. The music video recently scored a Best Video With A Message VMA nomination.
