Yesterday, we asked you to pick your top three movies of the year so far, and today we continue our look back at the very best that 2013 had to offer during the first six months of the year.
"Man of Steel" leads, but you can change that. Vote in our mid-year poll! Instead of waiting around for "prestige" movies to come along and steal all of the honors away from the films that might not be as fresh in people's minds, we decided to give our a few mid-year honors for the Best of 2013 (so far).
Check them out after the jump!
Best Villain Death - Zod So maybe it wasn't completely in line with the character of Superman as established in the comic books, but for "Man of Steel," the moment was a long time coming and earned thanks to the evilness of Michael Shannon's Zod. It's a shame Superman couldn't have save the thousands that died in their in-air fist fight, though. Oh well.
Best Guilt Trip - Harley in "Iron Man 3" When we heard that Tony Stark would gain a lovable kid sidekick, we were doubtful at best, but we underestimated the team of Shane Black and Robert Downey Jr. Harley proved to be much more than an annoying kid to put in harm's way in order to raise the stakes, and he provided one of the movie's best laughs.
Best Trailer - "The Wolf of Wall Street" To be completely honest, this was the only way we could include Martin Scorsese's upcoming movie in a list of honors for the first half of the year, but it was worth it. It was worth it for the GIF. #noregrets
Least Surprising Surprise Twist - "Star Trek Into Darkness" Really? You don't say? It's Khan? It's the guy that everyone said it was? And his true identity didn't have much impact because no one on the crew of the USS Enterprise had ever met him before, and we needed Old Spock to step in and tell us how dangerous he is? Okay, if you say so.
Most Beautiful Ugly Witch - Mila Kunis in "Oz the Great and Powerful" The producers of "Oz the Great and Powerful" did everything they could to keep the identity of the Wicked Witch of the West out of the press, and though pictures of Kunis in her green makeup did make their way online, the effect was pure Rami and, therefore, awesome.
Most Deserving of Surprise Oscar Nomination - James Franco in "Spring Breakers" Can we please just make this happen? (This and multiple noms for McConaughey.) If this happens, then Franco's acceptance speech could be "Look at
this sh**."
