Mack', Lew', K.R.I.T., and Kweli all believe in using music to educate their fans. "There are some people that, most of the stuff they hear about politics and social issues, they get from music," says K.R.I.T. "So I think, as artists, we need to try to put some kind of political content, something important, some kind of subject matter to our music." Talib always drops knowledge on his tracks, and encourages fans to keep up with local, national, and international events. "If you vote without being educated about who you're voting for, to me, that's just as bad as not voting," he told us before last year's Presidential election.
Speaking of politics, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis show major love to the LGBTQ community in their song "Same Love." The ode to same-sex marriage may be one of the most politically-charged rap songs of the year, with lyrics like, "Paying God, aw nah here we go/ America the brave still fears what we don't know."
And today, Macklemore and friends have a lot to celebrate!
