Phew, things got CRAY in last night's all-new episode of "Catfish"! I won't give away the ending in case you haven't seen it yet, but I can tell you that Nev unveiled some unbelievable stuff. But the episode also touched on some very serious, more widespread issues, like grief, substance abuse, and being able to trust people.
In the season premiere we met Cassie, a young woman who's fallen in love with Steve and asked him to marry her. The problem was that Cassie had never met Steve in person, so she went to Nev to see if she was being catfished. Cassie revealed that she "met" Steve after a very dark time in her life. Her father had been murdered after trying to stop a kidnapping, and Cassie turned to drinking to numb her pain. She was soon abusing the substance and not taking good care of herself.
The grief and shock of losing a loved one — especially in such a brutal and abrupt way — is not easy and not anything to be taken lightly. Half of Us has resources to those dealing with tragedy and loss, if you or someone you know is struggling.
Likewise, Half of Us has resources for substance abuse. Any substance can be abused, and there's a difference between using and abusing. Cassie had gotten to a point that her drinking was so bad that her mom and best friend staged an intervention. The end of last night's episode showed Cassie doing waaay better, showing that it is definitely possible to have a healthy recovery. The episode also shows the importance of finding trusted friends and fam to help you through a situation . . . but I don't want to give too much away.
