The Hollywood Reporter has compiled a list of this summer's movies that have already seen movement on the sequel front. The piece of news currently grabbing the most headlines is Fox's plan to move forward with a follow-up to Ridley Scott's "Prometheus."
According to the trade, Fox and Scott are eager to return to the world of the "Alien" quasi-prequel. The studio and the director "actively are pushing" toward a "Prometheus" sequel and are meeting with potential writers, since the original's co-writer, Damon Lindelof, is off busy doing one million other things at the moment.
Even though Lindelof may be out of the picture, Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender's head have already signed on, thanks to clauses in their original contracts. It looks like we may see the further adventures of Dr. Elizabeth Shaw and David 8's disembodied head.
Fox's president of production, Emma Watts, stated that while everyone involved wants to do the project, waiting for the right time is a priority. "Ridley is incredibly excited about the movie, but we have to get it right. We can't rush it," she said.
It's unclear whether Watts meant waiting for Lindelof's schedule to clear up, but we'll have to wait until at least 2014 or 2015 to see what's next from the universe.
When we spoke with Lindelof for the release of the original, he said that while the movie was made to stand on its own, seeds for a sequel were sown on purpose. "The conversations that we had about the story of 'Prometheus' and how it would end were always predicated on the idea that there would not be a sequel, that a sequel was not a foregone conclusion, and that the movie itself had to have a feeling of being complete," Lindelof said. "That being said, we also wanted the audience to feel that, like, if there were a sequel to 'Prometheus,' it wouldn't be 'Alien.' "
