English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran is quickly becoming a hot music commodity and things are only getting better for the rising star. Talking to an Australian radio station, Sheeran claimed he'll be performing Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" with the band's surviving members at the closing of the 2012 Olympic ceremonies in London.
Sheeran had previously been rumored to be joining The Who at the event.
"I'm playing the closing ceremony – which I think is kinda cool right?" he told Nova FM. "A lot of people think that I'm doing a song with The Who but I'm not -- I'm doing a song with Pink Floyd. I'm doing 'Wish You Were Here.'"
The news caused quite a stir … especially with Pink Floyd, who didn't take long to refute Sheeran's claim.
"In response to press speculation, Pink Floyd state that the band is NOT performing at the Closing Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games," the band said in a press statement.
There are likely a variety of reasons for Sheeran's confusion. Perhaps he was simply misinformed, or it's entirely possible that the band just didn't want to spoil what was supposed to be a surprise – kind of like when Warren G let the cat out of the bag for Dr. Dre's Coachella performance by revealing all of the expected guest appearances.
Also, ever since the surviving members of Pink Floyd last performed together in 2011 – when David Gilmour and drummer Nick Mason joined Roger Waters onstage to play "Outside The Wall" during a London performance – they said it would be the very last time. So perhaps Sheeran is performing the track with just one of the members and not necessarily the full band?
This year's closing ceremony lineup will celebrate 50 years of British music and is being kept a closely guarded secret with only The Who, Kaiser Chiefs, Take That, George Michael and Emeli Sande confirmed as of yet.
