Chewbacca is one of the most recognizable characters in the "Star Wars" universe, but what about the man inside the costume? That's who we'll be meeting in the upcoming movie by "Fanboys" director Kyle Newman.
The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the director and bonafide "Star Wars" fan has picked up the Black List script "Chewie," which was written by Evan Susser and Van Robichaux. The film details the life of Peter Mayhew, the actor who balanced his life as a hospital worker with his time portraying Chewbacca.
Mayhew will be involved in the project as well, as he confirmed in a tweet.
"Yes, we're working with Kyle Newman and the team on CHEWIE, The Movie and are hopeful it can move forward. Rumors can begin now, Forcecast!" he tweeted.
The seven-foot-three actor played Chewbacca in all four of the "Star Wars" movies the character appeared in, as well as the Disney ride Star Tours, the "Star Wars Holiday Special" and even episodes of "The Muppet Show" and "Glee." THR says the script is set against the backdrop of the creation of "Star Wars" and "tracks Mayhew as he tries to balance a career as a hospital worker while chasing Hollywood dreams by playing a suited alien who would go on to become one of the most iconic screen sidekicks in modern times."
It's unclear if this will be a comedy like "Fanboys" was or if it will be more of a drama. We also don't know where Newman is going to find someone nearly as tall as Mayhew who can also act. But hey, at least Chewbacca is finally getting his own standalone movie. The Wookie deserves it after all this time.
