Emmy Award-winning sitcom "Modern Family" is a goofy, yet accurate, portrayal of the changing demographics of American families. It's about families of different generations, nationalities, and sexual orientations coming together through a common loving (and laughing) thread. As more states open their doors to same-sex marriages, fans of gay couple Cam and Mitch are anxiously awaiting their television wedding.
Three states in the past two weeks (and six in the past six months) have legalized same-sex marriage, bringing the list to Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington. Washington D.C. (which is not a state!) and three Native American tribes are down with Cam and Mitch as well. "The freedom to marry is spreading. So it's time for America's biggest, red-beard-iest prime-time couple to get hitched in front of millions of American viewers," says the American Civil Liberties Union, an organization devoted to promoting the rights of all people. The ACLU believes that an on-screen wedding would get more people talking about, and pushing for, LGBT rights in all states. So, it's rallying "Modern" fans to press the series' writers and producers by RSVPing to the pair's wedding in an online campaign.
There's no denying the media's strong effect on the LGBT rights movement. When celebs wear purple, their fans wear purple. Likewise, when celebs come out in favor of human and marriage equality, those who look up to them often grow more open-minded as well. Jesse Tyler Ferguson -- the ginger actor who plays Mitch -- founded Tie The Knot to promote marriage equality through fashion. The org sells bow ties for $25, and 100% of proceeds go to charities that promote marriage equality.
Take action below to "RSVP" to Cam and Mitch's wedding -- letting "Modern Family" producers know you'd be there for the big day. Do it because you know the wedding planning scenes will be epic...and disastrous. Do it because, you wanna see Lily dressed as a flower girl. Do it because Cam and Mitch's wedding would show millions of "Modern Family" viewers just how important and deserved marriage is to all people.
