When Warner Bros. decided to move Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" from Oscar season 2012 to summer 2013, it seemed like a disaster waiting to happen. An adaption of a literary novel by one of the more eccentric stylists working in film today would be out of place alongside superheroes and intergalactic starships. Who would see "Gatsby" then? The answer: Lots of people.

Leonardo DiCaprio and company pulled off a shocker of a second place finish, taking in $51 million in ticket sales in the U.S. alone. That total made for the third biggest opening weekend that didn't result in a first place finish.

That honor went, once again, to "Iron Man 3." Marvel Studios continued its world-wide domination, adding $72 million to its domestic total, as it inches closer and closer to the $1 billion mark.
