International man of mystery boxes J.J. Abrams stopped by "The Daily Show" to have a little chat with Jedi hopeful Jon Stewart last night, and the late night host was able to pry some actual information from the secretive director.

The two geeked out over both "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" during the two parts of an extended interview, and during the most interesting part of the segment, Abrams shared his perspective on how the two series differed. "'Star Trek' was overtly an allegory of today, where 'Star Wars' always felt like more of an epic. It didn't even feel like science fiction to me, which sounds crazy, but 'Star Wars' never felt like a sci-fi thing, where 'Star Trek' did," he said. "We tried to make a 'Star Trek' movie that doesn't suffer from—. The original show was static because they couldn't afford to go anywhere or do anything. We had a slightly larger budget."

From the sounds of it, Abrams views the two properties as inherently different, so this should come as welcome news to those who feared that there would be too much overlap between the diametrically opposed franchises and fan bases.
