Animation takes audiences beyond the walls of reality into dream worlds of monsters, villains, heroes and other creatures. Most animated films give us something we have never seen before and it is very rare to see something we have seen before- but still be just as shocked.

"Boxtrolls," the latest feature project for Laika Studios and Focus Features, released a trailer showing a child surrounded by different "types" of parents including a man and woman, two men, two women, and two parents with "a grandmother, a grandfather, some weird aunties with funny hats and some weird uncles who like rare, smelly cheese."

Laika Studios, an animated feature and commercial production house located far from the Hollywood glitz in Portland, Oregon, is a small company with a big heart and even bigger ideas. Exploding onto the animated feature scene with the 2012 hit "ParaNorman," Laika Studios is gearing up for its 2014 feature release with "Boxtrolls."

But the "Boxtrolls" trailer isn't the first time Laika showed off their progressive views in the animation world. There was a gay teen character in "Paranorman," which was handled in the same manner-of-fact style seen in the "Boxtrolls" trailer.

The trailer debuted in the wake of the Supreme Court's DOMA and was pointed to as an example of the changing landscape in entertainment, especially the kind directed towards children.
