If you were a fan of the cult favorite UPN (then CW) mystery series "Veronica Mars," you've been probably been complaining that "they need to make a movie already. Jeez." Right? Well, now there's a chance to put your money where your mouth is.
Creator Rob Thomas, star Kristen Bell and the rest of the cast have taken to Kickstarter to raise the funds needed to make the "Veronica Mars" movie a reality. Warner Bros. still owns the rights to the series and the characters and have agreed to make and distribute a movie if these crazy kids are able to raise the $2 million in the next month.
While $2 million in one month sounds ambitious, take a look at the already rising sum. The Kickstarter page has been live for a few hours, and the project has taken in $30,000 in funds. And that number is probably long in the rearview mirror by now. Head over to the page to see the perks that the crew is offering for donations. The highest gift available costs $10,000 and will get you a small speaking role in the film.
Raising movie funding via Kickstarter is by no means an original idea, but there are a few groundbreaking aspects to the "Veronica Mars" project. This is by far the highest-profile production to seek Kickstarter money, and this kind of studio involvement is unprecedented. If this campaign is successful, we could be seeing a lot more fan-generated films in the near future.
