It's a dark day in the galaxy far, far away for fans of "Star Wars: The Clone Wars." After five years of fighting the good fight against the Trade Federation and Emperor Palpatine on Cartoon Network, the prequel series will end, as development on a new animated series begins.

"As we enter into an exciting new era focused on the next 'Star Wars' trilogy, Lucasfilm has decided to pursue a new direction in animated programming," Lucasfilm Animation announced in a press release. "We are exploring a whole new Star Wars series set in a time period previously untouched in 'Star Wars' films or television programming. You can expect more details in the months to come."

The release went to discuss what would happen to "Star War: The Clone Wars" in the near future.

"After five highly successful and critically acclaimed seasons of 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars,' we feel the time has come to wind down the series," Lucasfilm stated. "While the studio is no longer producing new episodes for Cartoon Network, we're continuing production on new 'Clone Wars' story arcs that promise to be some of the most thrilling adventures ever seen. Stay tuned for more information on where fans can soon find this bonus content."

The release also included a video message from supervising director Dave Filoni, which you can see below, and it also came with good news. "Star Wars: Detours" the supposed "comedy" from Seth Green, Matthew Senreich, and Todd Grimes will be postponed, so at least we have that going for us.

Though we can't be sure of the reasoning behind the "Clone Wars" cancel, it sounds like the new Lucasfilm is cleaning house and leaving the prequels and everything else from that time period in the dust. Hopefully this is a sign of a complete reboot of the franchise, steering us away from saturation, at least for the time being.
