Joss Whedon rose to the level of nerd god this past summer thanks to his excellent handling of "The Avengers," and when the future of "Star Wars" was up for grabs for the first time, the hordes pointed to the "Buffy" creator as their ideal — but likely impossible — candidate to direct.

The director told CNN, "I'm as angry as you should be. When I heard [about 'Star Wars'] I was like, 'I wonder ... no, I really can't do that. Oh, I already have a job.' I wouldn't clear the 'Avengers.' I'm having so much fun with that sequel right now, just with the script, that I couldn't imagine not doing it."

But playing a little game of "What If" with Digital Spy at SXSW, Whedon explained how he would handle has version of the galaxy far, far away.

Apparently, the Master of Marvel wouldn't be so keen on including Luke, Leia, Han, or any of the other characters from the original trilogy. "I wouldn't go back. I'd go forward," he said. "I would want to create characters that would resonate the way they did. Not that I don't want to see them, I would be excited to, but I also feel like I would want to explore a very different part of that universe."

As for recasting one of the classic characters, that's even more off-limits to Whedon. "That I would never want to do," he said. "Some things may not be rebooted."
