Disney and Sam Raimi took a big roll of the emerald die this past weekend on "Oz the Great and Powerful," and it is now safe to say that the gamble has paid off.
The "Wizard of Oz" prequel opened to massive numbers with an $80.2 million total, the third best March opening ever according to Box Office Mojo. Disney was clearly trying to replicate the March magic that Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" cast in 2010 when it opened to $116.1 million, and while they didn't quite match those numbers, the debut remains impressive, the best since "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey."
It wasn't all good news this weekend, however. The other new film, "Dead Man Down" with Colin Farrell and Noomi Rapace, failed to catch fire at the ticket counter. The revenge thriller only managed a $5.3 million opening.
