Cyclone Phailin made landfall in India last Saturday, and it was the worst cyclone the country has seen in almost 15 years.
While the death toll seems to be lower than expected (different sources are reporting different numbers), millions of people have been affected by the storm. The International Medical Corps explained, "In the wake of the storm, the destruction of standing crops has been massive - an estimated 2,000 square miles were washed away. In addition, electricity and communication lines are still down across large parts of Odisha [a state in India]. India's disaster teams have begun relief operations, with authorities especially concerned about the health and sanitation needs of close to a million people and the impact of the storm on people's homes and livelihoods."
The amount of damage still needs to be assessed, but here are some immediate ways you can take action to help those affected by the cyclone right now:
+ International Medical Corps
The International Medical Corps has set up an emergency response fund for India. You can give a recurring gift or a one-time amount of your choosing.
+ Global Giving
You can also donate to Global Giving. If you don't have a credit card and can't make an online payment, they have it set up so you can donate through text. Just text GIVE AID to 80088 and it will donate $10 to Phailan relief. (You can only do the text donation if you have an American phone.)
+ Share Support
If you're unable to donate, you can share words of support and spread awareness through social media. If other people learn about it, they might be able to donate.
