One week after National Coming Out Day comes Spirit Day -- an annual day to wear purple in support of the LGBTQ community. Today's about loving everyone, gay and straight, for who they are! In the spirit of this joyous, purple occasion, here are a few of our fave super spirited "coming out" songs.
No Spirit Day playlist would be complete without Diana Ross' "I'm Coming Out." Today isn't about pressuring people to discuss or admit to their sexual preferences. It's about celebrating the out members of the LGBTQ community and lending courage and acceptance to those who aren't out yet.
Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" is the acceptance anthem of our generation. Blast it to remind your friends, gay, straight, and everything else and inbetween, that they can be who they wanna be and love who they wanna love, free of judgement. This song became such a staple for Little Monsters everywhere that Gaga even created the Born This Way Foundation to stand up to bullying.
Best Video With A Message winner "Same Love" is one of the first mainstream rap songs to address and accept homosexuality. Although the hip hop community has been notoriously homophobic in the past, artists like Macklemore who show "Spirit" for the LGBTQ community, are breaking stereotypes and totally changin' the game.
+ Sara Barreilles, "Brave"
For many people, coming out involves a whole lotta bravery. Spirit Day is about boldly accepting who we are. If somebody you know is struggling with coming out, be brave for them by offering a non-judgmental ear and a safe space to open up in. And follow Sara's advice, "Say what you wanna say/And let the words fall out/Honestly I wanna see you be brave."
"Baby you're a fiiiiiiiiirework! Come on, let your coooolooooors burst!" Katy Perry's Grammy-nominated song has become a movement for all of us. "I want that song to be my signature song," said the singer. "It's very important for me to spread that message...I wrote it because everyone has the potential to be great." And know what's pretty damn great? People around the world wearing their most colorful purple clothing today, including many of your fave celebs.
