An anonymous source shared an interesting piece of information about the first trailer for "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" with TheOneRing.net. According to the fan site, the first trailer for the second film of the prequel trilogy is set to debut on YouTube this coming Wednesday, June 12 at 1 p.m. ET.
Not only that, the preview is supposedly more than a teaser trailer. The source claims that the trailer will clock in at two and a half minutes, which gives it an ample opportunity to really show off some new footage.
If the rumors are true — and we're inclined to believe they are — there are a few things we're hoping to see when Bilbo, Gandalf, and the dwarves takes to the big screen again.
Spiders!
Jackson and his team at WETA blew us away with Shelob when Frodo and Sam went up against her at the beginning of "Return of the King." Now that it's ten years later, we just know that the advances in CGI characters will result in even more terrifying and realistic spiders. Look at how much Gollum improved in the interim. We'd love to see how much the team can improve on what is to this day probably the best giant movie spider.
The Sultry Voice of Benedict Cumberbatch
This factor was seriously missing from "An Unexpected Journey," and since it's unlikely that Jackson will reveal all of his big tricks in this first trailer and show us the legendary dragon, the least we can expect is a voice cameo from Smaug. We'll also accept an appearance from the Necromancer, since that tease in the first film was simply too good.
Tauriel
The first image of Evangeline Lilly as the newly created ginger elf warrior left us wanting a little more, and since her true badassness might be best realized in action, we'd like to reserve some judgment for something like the first trailer.
The White Council
One of the big additions to the story of the "Hobbit" will be the grafting of a tale from the appendices of "Lord of the Rings," that sees Gandalf, Elrond, Galadriel, and Saruman venturing into Mirkwood forest to find out what sort of evil is corrupting the once happy wood. We don't know which movie will show the main portion of this quest, but Gandalf leaves the dwarves and Bilbo before they ever encounter Smaug. So we have our fingers crossed.
Nazgul!
The short clip from "The Desolation of Smaug" that Jackson included in his hour-long livestream hinted at the Ringwraiths escaping from their tombs. Since there are few characters as cool as the Nine, we'd love to see our buddies in black make an appearance in the new trailer.
