ABC Family will welcome a multiracial, LGBT family tonight with the premiere of their groundbreaking series, "The Fosters." Executive produced by Jennifer Lopez, the show tells the story of a lesbian biracial couple who raise one biological child, two adoptive twins and a child in foster care. Talk about diversity! Heck yes, 2013!
J.Lo hopes "The Fosters" will redefine what we call a "traditional" family. "When I read the script I just really felt like although it was a non-traditional family and it had kind of those newer themes to it, it had some really basic themes as well about family and love and what's really important in life," Lopez told Entertainment Tonight. "You know, that life can be complicated and messy sometimes, and not simple, and it was really, really a true depiction of family in this day and age."
Although society has progressed immensely in terms of accepting all people for who they are and who they choose to love, we still have a long way to go. Approximately 40% of homeless youth identify as LGBT; many were kicked out of their homes by their families because of it. Jennifer's show has already caught the attention of One Million Moms, who have called for the boycott of the show and J.Lo herself for promoting "anti-family" values. Even interracial marriage remains a contentious issue, after being officially legalized in the U.S. in 1967. A recent Cheerios ad that echoes "The Fosters" and Jennifer's sentiment on family and love has become quite divisive for one reason: the young girl featured is part of a biracial family.
Ready or not, "The Fosters" premieres tonight on ABC Family. When the show's concept landed on her lap, it especially stuck a chord with Jennifer. "I had an aunt who was gay and I lived with her and I loved her. She just passed away from cancer and I thought of her often when I was thinking of taking on this project and the prejudices that she faced." Love is louder than discrimination and prejudice -- take action below to show some love for all families.
