If you didn't pick up "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" on Blu-ray last week, you missed out on a live, hour-long look behind the scenes of the second installment hosted by director Peter Jackson and Jed Brophy, who played Nori the dwarf. More specifically, you missed a lot of time watching Jackson in the editing bay, some footage of on the green screen sets, and an actual clip from the "Desolation of Smaug."
All in all, it was a cool event, especially when we're as starved as we are for more "Hobbit." There were some definite highlights, and we've got the whole rundown for you after the jump!
No Smaug Yet
Jackson pulled a few tricks on us right away. Soon after entering the post production offices in Wellington, the director said that he would give us a glimpse at the legendary dragon and famed gold hoarder, Smaug. In reality, we saw a character from "How to Train Your Dragon" on a computer screen. Ha ha ha, P.J., very funny, just give us Cumbersmaug now!
On the Set
The event would ultimately prove not to be one big tease, as we feared. Jackson gave us several long previews of the set from "The Desolation of Smaug," including our first official look at Tauriel, the red-headed elvish bodyguard played by Evangeline Lilly, plus cameos from Orlando Bloom, returning as Legolas, and Luke Evans, who will play Bard the Bowman.
Clip from "Desolation of Smaug"
The real goods came at the end of the event. We were presented with an actual clip from the film.
SPOILERS
In the clip, we follow Gandalf as a he walks through a dark cavern, along a ledge. Eventually, he comes to what looks like a cage that has been broken from the inside. Radagast the Brown appears and asks why he's there. Gandalf explains that something broke out of this cell and the others like it, hinting as the Nazgul.
"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" opens on December 13, 2013.
