Bugs Bunny, Thumper, Roger Rabbit…we all had bunnies we loved growing up. But that doesn't mean you need to buy one for an Easter present. Trust us: the chocolate rabbits are just as awesome.

If you're celebrating Easter this coming week and want to gift a rabbit, please don't pick up your furry friend from a pet store. If you really want to make it the best Easter ever, you'd be much better off adopting one from a local shelter.

The Best Friends Animal Society, which is dedicated to making sure there are no more homeless pets, recently posted this article. The article lists some great reasons to adopt a bunny (They live a long time! They're cute and cuddly!), but includes a few things you really need to know about our furry friends:

+ Bunnies Get Euthanized More Than You Think

Insert a sad Emoji followed by a rabbit Emoji. According to BFAS, rabbits "are the third most euthanized animals in our nation's shelters." This means they fall just behind cats and dogs in the list of animals that are dying in shelters. If your heart is set on buying a bunny, why not adopt? You still give an amazing present AND save a bunny from a terrible fate.

+ Bunnies Are Fragile Critters

They're cute; they're cuddly; they're extremely fragile. Remember, baby bunnies "are not really suitable pets for small children." If you want to adopt one and don't know which rabbit is right for your family, look up local rabbit rescues; they'll be able to help you out.

+ Bunnies Are Not Always Kid-Friendly 

The site cautions that bunnies, if not handled the right way "can be easily injured or injure a child." Bunnies are not fans of being held, "because it deprives them of their only means of defense, which is to have their speedy legs firmly on the ground." Now you do. If you or your child picks up a scared rabbit, you could be scratched or bit as it tries to get away.

Those are just a few reasons why rabbits might not be the best Easter present after all. Like we said, listen to BFAS and adopt a bunny if you think your family is ready to offer an animal a "forever home." If not, just remember that chocolate bunnies are tasty AND won't hold it against you if you bite their ears off.
