A fire gutted "Twilight" actress Ashley Greene's LA condo last Friday, killing one of her two beloved Fox Terrier dogs. So freaking sad. Luckily no people were harmed, but according to the U.S. Fire Administration, fire claims the lives of 3,500 Americans every year! Follow these simple tips to keep your home and surroundings flame free!
+ Avoid Kitchen Nightmares
I was once so distracted by an episode of "Pretty Little Liars" that an unattended pot of ramen nearly set fire to my kitchen. Yes, I watch "Pretty Little Liars," and yes, I still eat cheap noodles in college-level proportions. The leading cause of kitchen fires is unattended cooking, so be sure to watch your food more closely than you watch your ex's Instagram! And when you're done, no matter how anxious you are to get back to PLL, please remember to turn the stove off!
+ Listen To Smokey The Bear
Outdoor fires burn millions of acres in America every year, and get this --- most of them are started by people! Listen to Smokey The Bear, and prevent forest fires by building fires in designated areas and extinguishing them when you're finished. Don't throw burning cigarettes (or the Bob Marley substitute) into the grass, and do call authorities if you accidentally set the land ablaze!
+ Avoid Certain Flames In The Bedroom
To avoid electrical fires, never trap a cord against a wall, where excessive heat can lead to flames. Take extra care when using portable heaters, keep clothes, curtains, and other flammable belongings away from hot surfaces, and never smoke in bed. Or, AHEM, at all. Make sure your smoke detectors and fire extinguishers are always working, and sleep in safety by replacing all mattresses made before the 2007 Federal Mattress Flammability Standard, which requires new beds to be significantly more fireproof.
