If you've been paying attention to the Oscar buzz around movies like "Lincoln" and "Django Unchained," you'd be forgiven for thinking that slavery was something that happened way back when. And if you hear anyone talking about modern-day slavery, they're probably talking about it as something that happens abroad. But what if you discovered that someone you knew was a victim of modern-day slavery? What would you do?
Today, the mtvU Against Our Will campaign is launching an interactive video experience, The Backstory, to ask that question and help you take action on this very real human rights atrocity. The idea for The Backstory came from four students from James Madison University, hoping it would spread awareness of modern-day slavery among their peers.
When you visit The Backstory, you'll first be confronted with a page of provocative ads and will be prompted to select one. When you do, you'll be taken inside the backstory of the seemingly innocuous posts, through a powerful series of videos featuring Alvin Ailey dancers, music by Kenna, and text read by rapper Talib Kweli. Throughout, you'll have the chance to take action to help end modern-day slavery, and be able to connect to your Facebook account for an even more personalized experience.
