It Gets Batter. No, that's not a typo. That's a message from Laurel, 15, who came out to her parents in a really creative way.
A few weeks ago, Kristin Russo gave her thoughts on the best way to come out in our The Hook Up series. She wrote, "I know that, in a time where you are unsure about EVERYTHING, all you want is for us to be like: STEP ONE BAKE A CAKE, STEP TWO EAT THE CAKE, STEP THREE TELL YOUR MOM. And…while you can totally follow those instructions, I have to break it to you: There is no rule book, there is no guidebook, and usually there is also no cake."
Well, this time there was!
We love a good coming out story. We write about everything from celebrities who prove "It Gets Better" to awesome moments of bravery and honesty. So when we heard that Laurel came out to her parents with the help of a handmade baked good, we had to bite.
The message on Laurel's cake was simple: I'm gay. She told her parents what she was hoping for in an accompanying note, with the help of some clever puns (example: "your acceptance would be the icing on the cake"). The note is heartwarming, yet lighthearted, including gems like, "I hope you still love me. I mean, it's hard not to love someone who baked you a cake."
According to her Tumblr, Laurel's parents are taking it well: "My mom saw it and cried of happiness. We hugged and cried together. Then, we all ate the cake and talked."
As much as we want to say Laurel's coming out definitely takes the, ahem, cake, everyone comes out in a different way. We applaud everyone's bravery -- you deserve to be happy and to come out when, how, and to who you feel comfortable!
