14-year-old Malala Yousafzai has been a Pakistani activist for girls' education for a few years now, but when the Taliban made an assassination attempt on her last week for her views on women's rights, she became an international name and hero. Selena Gomez is of the millions who considers Malala a brave girl and wants her fans to know more about the activist's message.

The UNICEF ambassador (who changed her Twitter pic to one of Malala!) Tweeted:

Selena's UNICEF link explains that 67 million school-age kids around the world are not in school, and girls. are less likely to enroll in school than boys. There are different reasons for girls not going to school. Sometimes there is no school in the area or parents cannot afford to send their girls to school. Sometimes when parents have both sons and daughters, they only send the sons to get an education. Sometimes girls grow up in an area where it is actually considered bad for girls to get an education. Seriously.

But when girls are educated, it empowers them and gives them abilities to take control of their lives. UNICEF (and Selena!) want you to educate yourself on the issue, and ask you to sign the ZERO pledge, which in part says you believe in "ZERO children denied an education." If you have money to spare, you can also donate to UNICEF's school programs in Pakistan.

UNICEF also said that its foremost concern is Malala's full recovery. This morning she is being airlifted to the United Kingdom for more medical treatment because she can receive specialized care there. Selena, along with people worldwide, continue to watch how Malala is doing and keep her in their thoughts. We hope you do too.
