David Fincher's "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" is the movie that's taken forever to get made. The director's been attached to the project for more than two years, and now we're learning that the film has been put on hold by Disney.

Variety is reporting that production on "20,000 Leagues" has been put on a "three-month hold" while Disney waits for writer Steven Zaillian to submit his new script. It's worth noting that Fincher never got a green light on the project despite working on it since 2010, so Disney's decision following the three-month hiatus is a pretty big deal.

Fincher reportedly has a back-up plan to garner more interest in the project: Brad Pitt. Variety says that Fincher is trying to get Pitt to play Ned Land in the flick. If anyone could get Pitt involved, it would be Fincher, as they worked together on "Fight Club," "Se7en" and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" in the past. If Pitt does come on board -- and that's a big "if" -- it will be interesting to see if Disney has a renewed interest in the movie.

When "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" was poised to come out, Fincher sat down with MTV News and talked about why he was drawn into the world of "20,000 Leagues." Apparently he's fascinated by the concept of the Jules Verne novel.

"The idea of a post-Civil War version of science fiction and the notion of being able to breathe underwater was so radical in its thinking. That's pretty cool," he said. "If you're going to do big tent-pole teenage PG-13 summer movies, it's kind of cool that it would be this."
