Photo: Spirit Day is this Friday, October 19!
What better way to follow up National Coming Out Day than with #SpiritDay this Friday, October 19! Get your wardrobe ready and join us in painting the town world purple to say "buh-bye" to hate and discrimination and show your spirit in the name of acceptance and equality.
This violet movement was first created by Canadian teenager Brittany McMillan to raise awareness about LGBT-targeted bullying -- an example of how one idea can blossom into a much bigger movement. And sometimes we think we are too "little" to make a difference... Pfft. Puhh-lease.
Along with Brittany, there are some other incredible ambassadors:
+ Katy Butler: Katy is an ambassador as well as an anti-bullying advocate who recently launched a petition calling on President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney to go purple on #SpiritDay. Think they will accept the challenge? Prior to this, she advocated for the MPAA to lower the "R" rating on "Bully" movie to a "PG-13" rating by gathering nearly half a million people to sign a petition. Also -- she's only 17 years old.
+ Zach Wahls: Many may remember straight ally Zach Wahls from his viral video where he spoke to a committee on why Iowa should not ban gay marriage. Totes one for the history books! Since this video he has sky-rocketed to full blown activist and even spoke at the 2012 Democratic National Convention. Watch his video gone viral below:
+ Jennifer Tyrell: You may of heard by now that the Boy Scouts of America don't allow LGBT scouts or leaders (boo!) and Jennifer experienced this first hand -- due to her sexuality, she was kicked out from being a leader. We're happy to see her as an ambassador of Spirit Day because to us she is most definitely a leader.
Now I know we only mentioned a few, but there are many other ambassadors set for #SpiritDay, from Shay Mitchell to Wendy Williams to Avan Jogia. So, join us and them this Friday in going purple! You in? Take action and pledge below.
