College students are always getting asked, "What's your major?" Some college students can now say, "Philanthropy."
"Philanthropy," which is a good SAT word for concern about human welfare and helping out those who need it, has now become a bachelor's degree at Indiana University. Well, technically you'd call it "philanthropic studies," but you know what I mean. This year, five students at the university are graduating with the degree, and 21 students have signed on to make it their major. The college is estimating the number will be up to 75 in three years.
Their studies include fundraising and management skills, but they also get into the philosophical aspects of philanthropy. For instance, what some people consider a good act might not be considered a good act by other people, so what do you do then?
Two of the five students are going to continue their schooling, and the other three are headed into the career world. Since this bachelor's degree is so new, everyone's curious to see how it's going to go over in the job market.
"I have a deep understanding of how nonprofits work with foundations, government, the private sector," said recent graduate Arishaa Khan, who's been hired at the Islamic Society of North America. Meanwhile, Brittany Sears (nope, not Spears) says that potential employers are liking all the volunteering and fundraising experience she has.
Maybe some of the celebs we dish about so much about would be interested in a degree in philanthropy, like Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus or Olivia Wilde? Or maybe they could get college credit for all the charity work they already do!
So now that you know this all exists, would you major in philanthropy? Weigh in below!
