October 10 is World Mental Health Day, and to honor the event and spread awareness, MTV is airing a hour-long documentary titled "Life Continued: Defeating Depression" at 7/8c.
The doc is being produced by Rainn Wilson's production company SoulPancake. It follows the lives of Devin and Sarah, two twenty-somethings who have grappled with depression.
Devin has faced both racism and homophobia and was in a very dark place before seeking out professional help. Sarah, meanwhile, started having issues with depression, self-harm and anorexia when she was 12. When Sarah was 17 she hit her lowest point and attempted to take her own life. After receiving medical help and counseling, she realized she had a second chance.
Depression is not something to be taken lightly, and about half of college students report that they've experienced depression so intense that they feel they can't function. Suicide is also the third-leading cause of death among people aged 15-24 so a documentary like this is clearly needed.
In addition to airing this important special, MTV and SoulPancake have teamed with the Jed Foundation. There are resources at Half of Us for battling depression, and Love is Louder has a new campaign to raise the volume on messages of hope and support. You can join it by sharing uplifting messages on social media with the hashtag #lifecontinued.
