If you think therapy is uncool, think again, 'cause the queen of cool, Katy Perry, recently opened up about how helpful therapy has been to her over the past few years. She joins a long list of female celebs like Demi Lovato and Halle Berry who can't stop talking about how sweet therapy is.
"Obviously I've been through a lot of therapy since my last record and that's what this is about," Katy told BBC Radio's Scott Mills about her new, empowering sound. "This new song is called 'Roar.' It's a bit of a self-empowering type of song," she said. "I wrote it because I was sick of keeping all these feelings inside and not speaking up for myself, which caused a lot of resentment."
"I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath," Katy sings on "Roar," which has topped the charts -- like a lion king of the iTunes Jungle -- just a few days after its release. But now Katy knows that the best way to get over things is to talk about 'em. There's nothing wrong with seeking mental help -- for big or small stuff, or even just to have a quick convo with an unbiased party who ain't all up in yo' bizzznazzz like your friends can sometimes be.
There's also nothing wrong with providing an ear or a professional referral to a friend in need. If you or someone you know has a lot of not-so-awesome things to "Roar" about, check out Half of Us for resources, contact a local mental health professional, or call 1-800-273-TALK for 24/7 anonymous help.
