Today is totally Mooonday, but it's also August 12, which means it's International Youth Day!
This year's theme is "Youth Migration: Moving Development Forward." The United Nations explains that it chose this topic because young people make up approximately 30% of everyone migrating around the world. WHO KNEW, right?! However, not a whole lot is said or understood about the issues young migrants face. Want to get more involved? Here are some ways:
+ Share Your Migration Stories
Did you or someone you know migrate from where you originally lived? You can share your personal story on International Youth Day's event wall on Facebook. This will help spread awareness on what issues migrants face, and it will also open up dialogue. Sharing is ALWAYS caring.
+ Watch "Akhtar's Story"
The United Nations has put "Akhtar's Story" on YouTube for you to watch. In the five minute vid, we get to know Akhtar Azimi, who left his home country of Afghanistan to escape violence. He's been journeying the globe for over four years, trying to find a home. The five minute movie gives an inside look on what he's been going through.
Let's see if we can get International Youth Day trending! You can follow @UN4Youth and use hashtag #YouthDay to get things going. You might be surprised by what you learn from other Tweets, and you're more than welcome to share your own stories!
Whatever you do, you can get totally creative with your activities and your discussion. In fact, you can email the United Nations at youth@un.org to talk about what you're up to, and the most creative activities will be highlighted on the website!
