There are more slaves today than in any other time in human history. Still think slavery is a thing of the past? It is estimated that there are between 12 and 27 million people enslaved around the world, including the United States. The End It Movement wants to "Shine a Light on Slavery," so we have to ask -- are you in it to "End It"?
For those who aren't clear on what slavery looks like in the 21st Century, slavery occurs when "one person completely controls another person, using violence or the threat of violence to maintain that control, exploits them economically, pays them nothing and they cannot walk away." The End It Movement has teamed up with several coalition partners to help raise awareness and funds to help shine a light on modern-day slavery. Below are four ways you can take action to help stop the slave trade.
+ Know the Facts
If you're interested in helping end the modern-day slave trade, you can get the facts online through mtvU's Against Our will campaign. And even though we've become accustomed to seeing and hearing about pimps in pop culture, it's rare that we see the whole story. Go inside the backstory of a sex trafficking survivor for more.
+ Raise Your Voice
If you can't afford to donate to the cause right now, you can still let people know slavery still exists. Share the facts you learn on your Facebook page and Twitter account by using the #EndItMovement hashtag. You can also mark a red "X" on your hand like some of your favorite celebs, including Carrie Underwood and Ian Somerhalder, and use it as your profile picture so everyone knows you stand against slavery.
+ Shop for a Cause
The End It Movement will donate 100 percent of the proceeds raised on the site to causes that fight slavery. You can check out the site's shop to see what's available. Personally, I love this t-shirt with the "End It" logo on it! If that's not your style, check out the official action kit.
+ Support a Coalition Partner
If you want to get more involved, get out the list of coalition partners the End It Movement is working with to see if you can volunteer with them. Each organization is dedicated to raising awareness and funds to help end slavery, so you will be working alongside modern-day abolitionists!
