Happy Independence Day! Nope, I'm not five days late on this -- today is Independence Day in South Sudan, and Mandy Moore is celebrating.
The actress, singer and all-around good person Tweeted:
Happy Independence Day #SouthSudan! I will never forget my life-changing trip there in 2009. Here's to a future of peace and prosperity.
— Mandy Moore (@TheMandyMoore) July 9, 2012
People who follow Mandy's Tweets know she Tweets a lot about all sorts of do-gooder things. She also travels a lot to get things done, and that included a trip to South Sudan in 2009. Population Services International (PSI) invited her on a trip to Africa, and this got her very dedicated to helping the people of South Sudan. Taking care of people's health is a major aspect Mandy concentrates on, saying, "80 percent of the population in the developing world will never step foot in a health facility." She knows that needs to change.
But Mandy isn't just paying attention to health; she's concerned about South Sudan as a whole. South Sudan became an independent state one year ago today, so people around the world are celebrating, including our Ms. Moore. Still, this doesn't mean everything is perfect in the new country. South Sudan is still poverty-stricken and faces many sad realities, like the fact that a woman is more likely to die from childbirth than finish up school, making Mandy's public health work that much more crucial.
Many people still view this Independence Day as a dawn of a bright new future for South Sudan. And Mandy Moore is sure to be one of the people working to make each of South Sudan's Independence Days better than the last one.
