Dan was at Cornell University on tonight's episode of Savage U and found that even long hours studying can't stop students from getting it on—the most popular hook-up spot on campus is the library! But not everyone is loving the idea of random hook-ups, as Dan learned from Jordana.
+The Deets
Jordana is struggling with the hook-up culture at Cornell. Everyone seems to be fine with low-key sexual relationships without much commitment or emotional investment. She is over it and really craving a real, romantic relationship.
+The (SEX)perts Weigh In
Jordana, we bet there are SO many girls and guys out there who can relate to this! Students at all the schools Dan visited said hook-ups are far more common than real relationships on campus, but over and over we also heard people talk about wanting to find something more meaningful.
You get to decide the kind of dating life you want to have, and if hooking up isn't for you, don't do it! If finding someone who wants to go on a real date is important to you, be upfront when you meet someone you're interested in. A lot of people just try to go with the flow at college, they may not be that into random hookups either but don't feel they have other options.
Dan warns that while it's great to look for love, it's important not to buy into a romantic-comedy version of what love should be. He also shared some wisdom on guy psychology.
"Guys get spooked," he said, so just pace yourself when revealing your feelings for someone new.
+What You Can Do
Don't buy into the hype—you don't have to be down with random hook-ups just to have a social life in college. You know what you're looking for, so go after it and don't be afraid to set the bar high. It may take some time to find the right person, someone who is looking for a similar level of commitment, but they are out there!
And if you are hooking up (exclusively or not):
-Know the risks: Having sex brings a lot of responsibilities with it, including the possibility of pregnancy or contracting an STD. One in two sexually active young people will have an STD by the time they are 25, and 7 in 10 pregnancies among single women 18-29 are unplanned.
-Protect yourself: Condoms are the only method that can help protect from both STDs and pregnancy. There are a variety of methods out there that work well for preventing pregnancy (and some that don't), so read up here.
-Get yourself tested: Getting tested is the only way to find out for sure if you have an STD. The good news is that all STDs are treatable, but if you leave an STD untreated some of them can have serious long term consequences. Find a clinic near you today.
