It's been a few weeks since "Battleship" failed to meet its blockbuster ambitions, and in a new interview, director Peter Berg says he has a pretty good idea of what sank his "Battleship."
Speaking at this past weekend's Produced By Conference in a talk called "Passion Projects: Making Films Everyone Says Will Never Get Made," Berg surprisingly turned discussion toward his latest movie and its disappointing returns.
"I have a movie in theaters right now which has obviously underperformed in many ways," Berg said. "When [a movie] doesn't work, it's an … interesting opportunity to look at what went wrong and how it went wrong."
In the weeks since the release of "Battleship," Berg said that he's concluded that the film's scale made it difficult for him to "get inside" of it. "It was a movie that I tried as hard as I could to get inside of," he said. "But the concept is so big and powerful, and the money is so big and so powerful, that the movie is going to run away with itself."
When a movie is as big as "Battleship" was for Berg, the director said that he has a difficult time becoming as intimate with the movie as he usually likes to. "I want to get inside the movie's world and feel like I know it better than anyone, and I couldn't do that … It was an interesting eye-opener," he said.
"Battleship," which cost $209 million to make, is currently sitting at $59 million at the domestic box office.
