Mary J. Blige is very proud of her protégée Starshell for her musical abilities, but she's also proud of the singer for her suicide prevention work.
Mary J. Tweeted:

Starshell has a song named "Birthday Girl," but Birthday Girl is also a brand and a mission. Since most girls love it when it's their birthday, part of the idea is to celebrate every day like it's you b-day. But there's more! At Starshell's Birthday Girl site, you can get cool clothes and accessories, and a portion of the proceeds is donated to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and other suicide prevention orgs. It's called the "Celebrate Life, Save a Life" campaign, and Starshell puts it this way, "With every item you purchase at Birthday Girl World, you save someone's life."
National Suicide Prevention Week runs from September 8 to 14 this year, but suicide prevention is something Starshell works on all the time, and she has very personal reasons for this. "I lost my sister to suicide when she was 14 years old," the singer said. "I tell my story in hopes that it will make a difference and help others. I created the BIRTHDAY GIRL movement in her honor." She also began using the name Starshell in her honor, because her sister's name had been Starchelle.
We can see why Mary J. Blige is so impressed with Starshell. She's a rising star in the music world (no pun intended), and she's also reaching for the stars when it comes to helping others.
