Lady Gaga has given lots of hair-raising performances over the years, but her latest show, as the opening act of the 2013 iTunes Festival in London, might be the most shocking one yet.
In a candid moment with her fans, the artist removed her wig and showed her fans her real hair.
Over the last few years of her career, Lady Gaga has made it clear to her fans that they were to come as they were to her shows. To her, her "Little Monsters" were beautiful no matter how they looked or dressed, and she never hesitated to call herself their "Mother." The singer proved that point further on Sunday by pulling off one of the many wigs she dons during the show. By revealing what's underneath her wig, she showed her fans that their appearance doesn't change what counts: who they are.
Before continuing with her set, Gaga told her fans that she was going to show them "the human underneath the wigs." She later revealed that she first turned to "wigs and make-up" to "cover up the pain" of "some really tough times." As she told MTV in her "Inside the Outside" special, she bought her first wig in high school. Gaga said she chose to create the image of someone else when she didn't feel strong enough to just be herself.
If, like Gaga, you've felt like you weren't enough as you were, you're not alone. Life gets tough sometimes, so if you need wigs or make-up or clothes to help you put on your poker face, then go for it! Just remember that who people see on the outside isn't nearly as important as who you are on the inside. Take Gaga's lead and do what feels right for you.
